Restrictions:
Most things in the Werewolf Corebook and
Player's Guide apply to all Shifters. However, there are some
exceptions. Some Shifters don't have Rage, some can't Step
Sideways without a Gift, and others are simply a matter of
biology.
Of the basic traits, these are inappropriate (or require some
work) for Bastet Characters. Note that at the end, there are a
couple of these I put in because they ARE appropriate, but are
simply poorly worded for Bastet.
Backgrounds:
Ancestors (aka Past Life): Bastet, lacking the strong ties to the
Umbra that Garou have, do not have Tribal Homelands. They also do
not have their Ancestors butting into their business. Do not take
this. (The exception being Swara, who's ties to the land allow them a similar
trait. Not the same as what Garou do, but close enough for the mechanics to
work.)
Totem: Bastet do not form Totem relationships. A Totem is 'the
Uber Alpha' of a pack. It provides purpose and the power to
fulfill that purpose. A Jamak is a friend, who will do favors for
a Bastet, but also expects favors in return. Jamak points ~can~
be shared by a Pride, but the dynamic will be far different. A
Jamak is far more likely to 'play favorites', seeing each
individual Bastet, as opposed to a Totem that will see the Pack
first, and the individual attention second.
Merits & Flaws:
Berserker: (by Tribe basis) Bastet are said to have a greater
control over their Rage than do Garou. A few consider themselves
warriors on their level (and not completely without reason).
However, the smaller breeds of Great Cat will not fight when
fleeing is an option. For Qualmi, Bubasti, and Swara, this is
inappropriate. Bagheera, Ceilican, and Pumonca it's a maybe.
Only for Balam, Kahn, and Simba is this really
appropriate.
Pack Mentality: Even Simba and Swara, who have feline forms that do promote
group activities, are not held together at the same level. A wolf alone will
starve, a lion alone will go from eating elephants to eating gazelle.
Eidetic Memory: Replaced by Photographic Memory (3 pts) in the
Bastet book.
Moon Bound: Bastet have no Auspices.
Ancestor Ally: Bastet don't have access to the wisdom of their
Ancestors. (Including Swara)
Natural Channel: Bastet need a Gift to Step Sideways, and as such
also need Gifts to deal with Spirits. It doesn't come naturally
to them as it does to Garou.
Insane Past Life: Bastet have no access to Ancestors. (Swara are different
enough to not use this either.)
Slip Sideways: Bastet do not Sidestep naturally.
Abilities:
Kailindo: No, Bastet don't have it. Don't have a version of it.
Klaive Dueling: A Hakar is a functional weapon, used to hunt and
kill. Not to play prissy fancy pants at the Taghairm. You pull
one for Hanshii, you mean to put a permanent end to the rival.
Stick with Melee.
Appropriate, but need a mention:
Backgrounds:
Fetish: Trinket, same thing.
Pure Breed: Unlike Garou, who need the Tribal Totem to back the
trait, Bastet do not have Tribal Totems. However, Pure Breed
still reflects the Bastet's capacity to play up Tribal Strengths
at a glance, and is most commonly associated with strong (to the
point of possibly inbred) bloodlines. (An unfortunately common occurrence on the
feline side of the family.)
Merits & Flaws:
Banned Transformation: Replace Wolfsbane with Cat's Wort
Forced Transformation: Cut the Auspice one out (No Auspices). Cut
the Umbra one out (no Sidestepping). Cut Wyrm-Taint out (they
don't see the Wyrm the way Garou do). Replace Wolfsbane with
Cat's Wort.
Sign of the Wolf: Do some research, find an appropriate version
for Bastet characters.
Fair Glabro: Fair Sokto , same thing.
Wolf Years: Hey, cat years suck just as much.
Abilities:
Swimming: Cats are NOT afraid of water. They might be afraid of
crocodiles, alligators, or hippos. They might be leery of of the
river that wasn't there the day before in areas where flash-flood
followed by desert is the norm. A river that a human can swim in,
so can cats.
